The Natural Lip Balm Showdown: Last Lip Balm Standing

Opting for an all natural lip balm was a no brainer for me. After all, my favorite facial feature is my lips. I got ’em from my mama and they’re fuller than most.

Which is a great thing – except they lean toward dry, sensitive and have a tendency to crack and bleed, especially in the winter. And when they get like that, they quickly become the most noticeable feature on my face – and not for the reasons I want.

As such, I’ve gone through more lip balms than toilet paper (okay, no, that’d be sort of gross if true) and by now, nurture a deep, wild, holy appreciation for lip balms that can nourish and heal. Of course, if they smell delish – that’s a big bonus as well.

Over the past few years, I’ve made the complete switch to all natural lip balm (we eat this stuff, ya know?) – even whipping up some DIY organic lip balm for myself – and noticed that the best natural lip balms are preventative as well as healing – as in, I find myself needing much less applications throughout the day.

So to share the well moisturized lip love, I’ve finally compiled a little list of reviews. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect natural lip balm – well, you know what to do!

Top 3 Perfect Natural Lip Balm Picks

There are just a few criteria I look for when choosing natural lip balm. The first is obviously how clean the ingredients are. This is of profound importance not only because we end up eating a lot of this stuff, but because as a new mom, I wind up kissing my baby a lot and I’d prefer my kisses to be non-toxic.

The second criterion is simply how nourishing the formula is. Especially in the winter months, my lips are as dry as the Sahara and I need something that’s going to hydrate and deep moisturize them back to life.

And last but not least – flavors. Because yum. There’s nothing like a delicious dessert to make the whole process of applying natural lip balm a pure pleasure.

So which natural lip balm wins the game? Here are my absolute favorites.

My all-time favorite natural lip balm is Chai Spice from HURRAW! This stuff is seriously delicious, like addictively so. But if you’re not a Chai person – that’s cool, they’ve got tons of yummy flavors. Like Earl Gray. And Root Beer will make you want to party.

And mmmm, Vanilla Bean. If you – like me – are prone to dry, cracked lips, their Moon Lip Treatment is a must-have during the winter months.

HURRAW’s affordably-priced natural lip balms are super moisturizing (the Green Tea and Moon Treatment have extra, extra moist power), come in the cutest designs, aren’t overpoweringly scented, have incredibly staying power, are made using awesomely beneficial organic, cold-pressed oils like argan, rosehip and avocado, and they don’t melt in your pocket – even in the summer months.

They’re also obviously all-natural, raw, vegan, and gluten free. So feel free to lick that stuff off your lips if you want. Hurrah for Hurraw!

Ingredients: (for Root Beer flavor):Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Wildcrafted Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, *Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Natural Flavors, Tocopherols (Sunflower), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Paste*

Treat Natural Lip Balm

Love rich, sensuous flavors – without the calories or guilt? You need to try TREAT’s range of organic lip balm. They’re so underrated and yet so amazingly good.

How so? Their range of natural lip balms are quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to green-beauty-lovin’ dessert addicts.

Here’s a taste: Birthday Cake, White Chocolate, Rainbow Sherbet, Better than Sex Cake, Caramel Apple, Angel Food Cake, Chocolate Mint!

Wearing their yummy natural lip balms feels a little naughty, like you’re sneaking around a bit of dessert on your lips all day. It’s a gorgeous feeling to be smelling birthday cake all day – without the calories 🙂

Their lip balms are also super moisturizing without much shininess or heaviness – probably ’cause they’re not too heavy on the beeswax and use several, ‘lighter’ oils like sweet almond and apricot kernel oil. And of course, the whole range of lip balms are all natural.

And not only natural – they’re made with USDA Certified Organic ingredients and are 100% cruelty free.

Oh, and they trump Hurraw’s lip balms in one huge way – they’re a lot bigger. So you get more bang for your buck as well.

Ingredients (for Angel Food Cake): *Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, *Organic Beeswax, *Organic Flavor (organic fruit & plant extracts in a vegetable carrier oil), *Organic Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, *Organic Stevia Leaf Extract

Tata Harper Lip Treatment

Okay, this one is a splurge lip balm but it is a damn sexy lip balm (well, as sexy as a lip balm could be). Seriously, it’s super lux-gorgeous looking and smelling. It feels like a mini makeover whenever I smear it on with just the right hint of color.

And it’s more than a pretty face – Be Fierce is super hydrating in a way that lasts and lasts. I can apply a bit before I go to work in the morning and my lips are still moist by lunchtime – yes, in the winter months. That’s some effective lip balm right there.

It’s a price-y lip balm, but it just feels so good. Extra perk? It’s got the loveliest, silkiest texture that makes it perfect to layer with lipsticks.

Oh, and of course it’s all natural, made with organic ingredients, free of artificial fragrances, synthetics, filler, and gluten. And no animal testing for this baby.

Ingredients: Olea europaea (Olive) oil*, Cera Alba(Beeswax)*, Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) seed oil*, Theobroma Cacao*, Euterpe oleracea (Acai) fruit oil, Prunus armeniaca (Apricot) kernel oil*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil*, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil*, Sambucus nigra (Elderberry) fruit extract, Spiraea Ulmaria (meadowsweet) leaf extract*,  Medicago sativa (Alfalfa) leaf Extract*, Calendula officinalis flower Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) leaf Extract*, Symphytum officinale (Comfrey) leaf Extract*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), (natural and organic) Aroma

Other Natural Lip Balms We Love

  • Honest Beauty Tinted Lip Balm: Want to give your lips a little boost of gorgeous color while nourishing them with antioxidants and nourishing butters?
  • Real Purity’s Vitamin E Lip Balm: Clad in a sleek black lipstick case, this super smooth and creamy lip balm has soothing Calendula and Chamomile combined with healing St. John’s Wort. All ingredients (except the castor oil) are organic.
  • RMS Lip & Skin Balm: This one is price-y but so worth it if you’ve got seriously chapped lips. It’s got tiny little gritty bits in it that help exfoliate the cracked, chapped gunk off your lips and the stuff is deeply moisturizing – so much so that you need very little at a time, making this stuff last forever. I’ve also got a patch of psoriasis on my right nostril (weird, I know) that tends to flake in dry, cold months and this balm has been great for that. So it’s like a super-uber-lip-skin-moisturizer. Love it.
  • Dr Bronner’s Naked: Got really, very sensitive lips? This is your go-to natural lip balm. This USDA Certified Organic all-natural lip balm is scentless, tasteless and very simply formulated – just 5 ingredients. It’s perfect for men as well as anyone who’s allergic to nuts (most lip balms have sweet almond oil in ’em, which you might get unnecessary itchiness from).
  • EOS Lip Balm Pods: Super cute and easy to store everywhere, these little ‘pods’ are full of 100% natural, 95% organic, paraben- and petrolatum-free lip balms in very yummy, very fruity flavors.
  • Beauty by Earth Beeswax Lip Balm: One of the best value natural lip balms you’ll find, these beeswax-based lip balms are all-natural, non-toxic, non-GMO, totally cruelty free and come in yummy flavors like Vanilla Bean and honey. They’re deeply moisturizing – the only possibly downside is that they do contain lanolin, which can be a problem if you’re lanolin-sensitive.
