7 Organic Lip Gloss Brands to Love

Organic lip gloss combines two of the things we love best: the perfect daytime lip color with none of the toxins.

And that’s a wonderful thing because lip gloss is back in full force. Not surprising since it’s the perfect product to lend just the right amount of plumpy pout to even the most toned down looks. And there’s no denying that beautifully stained, juicy lips will always be in fashion.

We’d even go so far as to guess that if Goldilocks had weighed in on lip wear, she would’ve thought lip balm too plain, lipstick too fierce but lip gloss JUST RIGHT.

No wonder there are whole songs about the stuff.

They say my lip gloss is cool. My lip gloss be popping. I’m standing at my locker. And all the boys keep stopping. What you know ’bout me?

Yet, the lip gloss of yesteryear is something that we’re solidly over. You know what we’re talking about – those oily, plastic sheen-imparting lip gloss brands that dominated the 90s.

Thank the beauty gods for that because it’s now 2020 and we have access to a much classier range of lip gloss options – the best of which are au naturale and good enough to eat.

And speaking of eating your lip gloss…

Why Does Natural Lip Gloss Matter?

This gloss-giving, plump-imparting lip product does something that no other lip product can: it blesses our lips with that perfect daytime, cute-but-not-too-overdone sort of color and glow.

So it’s no wonder we are so heavily dependent on the stuff. In fact, we use it daily – religiously and in copious amounts. So it’s a mighty good thing that there are gorgeous organic lip gloss options that are whistle-clean and packed with goodness to boot. Let’s dig into why for a moment, shall we?

You eat this stuff

Lip gloss is the sort of stuff you wear all day. It’s on when you kiss your baby. It’s on when you lick that salad dressing off your lips. So considering we eat this stuff, going natural is a no brainer.

Lip gloss can be toxic

The slick and much-too-sticky lip glosses of yesteryear got their fake shine mostly from mineral oils and petroleum jelly. And you already know that these industrial by-products aren’t doing your delicate lips any favors.

But it doesn’t stop there. Not only are they simply unhelpful, but research shows that conventional lip glosses commonly sold at drug and department stores test positive for toxic metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other toxic metals.

Natural lip gloss does double duty

Your average drugstore lip gloss can get you that insta-shine look typical of lip gloss…but that’s where it stops. A natural, non toxic lip gloss, on the other hand, nourishes with natural emollients like coconut oil, shea butter, and cacao butter so your lips acutally hold onto the look of juicy suppleness that lip gloss imparts.

Instead of synthetic dyes and fragrances that irritate your fragile lip skin, the best organic lip gloss brands source their colors from beautifully rich natural pigments like organic beet root.

And as if that weren’t enough, many of these natural lip gloss brands are also packing peptides and stem cells to nurse dry, chapped lips back to health.

It starts with lip gloss

If you’re endeavoring to replace your makeup shelf with clean, green beauty – lip gloss is the first place to start.

Because it just makes sense to start with the products you use most often and lip gloss definitely fits the bill.

What’s the Best Organic Lip Gloss?

Lip gloss is one of the most over-looked yet highly important parts of any beauty routine. Which is why it’s crucial that the ingredients in your lip gloss are as clean as possible. After all, you’re most likely going to end up eating this stuff throughout the day.

But that’s where the difficulty lies – as simple as it is, lip gloss seems like the sort of thing that’d be really difficult to find a natural alternative for. I mean, isn’t it all the chemical gunk that gives these glosses their lustrous, luminescent gloss?

Well, lucky for all us gloss-lovers – turns out there’s a whole range of natural ingredients (and smarty pant chemists who combine them together) that make it a little too easy to replace toxic-metal-laden lip gloss with something that’s actually good for your pucker.

So where should you look to get your toxin-free gloss on? Here are our best picks for organic lip gloss.

100% Pure Lip Gloss

This just might be the best organic lip gloss ever created. It ingeniously gets its natural hues from the likes of pomegranate and rhubarb and goes on very smooth and sheer and just seeps into your lips, leaving a perfect stain of color that enhances your lips in just the right way.

Honestly, we don’t know exactly how it does what it does, but their colors work well for every skin tone. No joke. It’s like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Lip Glosses. And for every person who puts it on, it makes their lips look natural, yet better. Sounds weird – but you gotta try it to believe.

Oh, and ever have a perfectly lovely lip gloss on when a wind goes by and suddenly you have all your loose hair strands plastered to your lips?

Yea, that doesn’t happen with these. They’re super hydrating and will keep your lips moisturized for hours but it’s non-sticky as well. Think light, smooth and nourishing rather than I-just-rubbed-my-lips-in-oil.

But that’s not all there is to love. They’ve also got a light shine that lends your lips a very natural plushness.

Pacifica Beauty Enlightened Gloss

Beautifully-priced (especially as far as organic cosmetics go) and the ideal natural lip gloss for people who prefer their lip gloss a little thicker. The thickness comes from a combination of several ultra-nourishing oils and butters, which is great ’cause this super moisturizing lip gloss functions sort of as a lip balm – as in, this lip gloss leaves your lips feeling plump and very hydrated for hours.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering – it’s on the thicker side, but it’s not sticky. It’s more of a full and luscious sort of thick hydration rather than a slippery, oily sort of coating that sits on your lips.

RMS Beauty Lip Shine

Love glosses that give your lips a shine? Well, these lip shines are true to their name – but it doesn’t give that sort of middle-school-princess, plasticky sort of shininess.

No, this shine is classier. Fresher. Like you just had a lovely bowl of cherries and a bit of the juice has chosen to linger on your lips.

Okay, that’s a bit much but the point is – this is shiny lip gloss for grown-ups. And like pretty much all of RMS’s products, their range of lip glosses are classy as hell. They feel luxurious going on (creamy and rich, but not overly so) and look luxurious when on.

Oh, and if you have a kissing buddy who is sensitive to scent – they’ll love this one. It’s scentless (fragrance-free).

W3ll People Bio Extreme Lip Gloss

This is the only lip gloss I get for my mom. She likes really subtle shades and has really sensitive skin and this is probably the only lip gloss that caters to both. It’s also super hydrating, obviously made from 100% natural ingredients, fragrance-free (‘though it has a lovely cinnamon-y scent) and also a cruelty-free lip gloss.

Tata Harper Volumizing Lip and Cheek Tint

Just total love. The thing about Tata Harper’s products is that they’re, well, stunning looking. And of course you shouldn’t judge a lip gloss by its cover, but the sheer act of opening up the lovely green and gold case to find the delicate pink lip tint produces an inexplicable pleasure.

And the lip and cheek tint inside is worthy of its packaging.  The colors are gorgeous and so, so natural. They give a very delicate, natural color on both the lips and cheeks – a bit like a watercolor – and apply effortlessly and blend flawlessly.

It’s hydrating on the lips and enhances your natural lip color, but we especially love it for the cheeks – it gives a dewy luminance that provides the perfect finishing touch. It’s sort of addicting, to be honest. It’s like radiance in a jar.

Overall, a lovely 2-in-1.

ILIA Organic Lip Gloss

Okay, ILIA has the prettiest natural lip gloss colors. They currently only have 6 of them – but each and every one is gorgeous. Seriously, check ’em out.

Took a peek? Well, the lip gloss formula is as sleek as their packaging – it’s a super light feeling lip gloss with a very smooth texture. And you wouldn’t guess it from how light it feels, but it’s full of ultra-nourishing oils and butters.

What we really love about ILIA’s glosses, though, is how wonderfully subtle the gloss is. It goes on beautifully and it fades off just as beautifully – it doesn’t leave patches of color on your lips or linger in the cracks of your lips and it doesn’t build up when you reapply it. It is simply a very easy-to-love lip gloss in a range of absurdly pretty colors.

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter*, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil*, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Brassica Campestris, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer, Isostearyl Citrate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Fruit Oil, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Oil, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Oil. Vapour Organic Beauty Elixir Lip Plumping Gloss

Vapour’s organic lip gloss is for those who love their gloss very light-weight. It’s composed of lovely, hydrating ingredients but the gloss itself is quite thin and feels sort of like applying tinted water. The closest thing to compare it to is like putting on aloe vera gel – light moisture, yet very light.

The colors are beautiful, the ingredients are top-notch (perfect for sensitive skin), but as for the plumping? Can’t really say that’s a visible effect. Not really a con, but if you’re looking for fuller lips – you might want to try a dedicated natural lip plumper for that.

Oh, and one drawback – this lip gloss is not the best for lasting power. So expect to re-apply several times throughout the day.

Ingredients: Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil* infused with melissa officinalis (lemon balm)*, commiphora myrrha (myrrh), cetraria islandica (iceland moss)*, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf*; castor isostearate beeswax succinate**, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil & lecithin & euterpe oleracea (acai) fruit extract & lycium barbarum (goji) fruit extract*, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, essential oils & natural fruit essences, cera alba (beeswax)*, tocopherol (natural vitamin e), stevia rebaudiana (stevia) extract

And there you have it – 7 gorgeously tinted reasons to ditch conventional lip gloss for a non toxic lip gloss that’s chock full of natural, organic ingredients that do the job and then some.
